Dealing with anger from a Christian perspective

In The Anger Workbook, Drs. Les Carter and Frank Minirth have written a helpful guide for people who struggle to manage their anger. It is, as the title indicates, a workbook, which means it invites an active participation from the reader. On nearly every page, the authors ask questions and provide space for readers to write their responses. It comes in four parts: The first is about identifying anger. In it, Carter and Minirth define anger as an intent to preserve personal worth, essential needs, or basic convictions (10). They argue that anger has many manifestations. In other words, people who yell and throw things are not the only ones who might have a problem with anger. They argue that there are five ways to handle anger: Suppression, Open Aggression, Passive Aggression, Assertiveness, or Dropping It (26). They encourage readers to avoid the first three, and choose which of the last two is most appropriate in the circumstances. In the second part, they argue that anger thrives on unmet needs. People tend to respond in anger, for example, when they feel unloved or controlled. In the third part, they explore how other emotions cause anger. The emotions they look at are pride, fear, loneliness, and feelings of inferiority. The fourth part includes three chapters: one for parents on dealing with anger in their children, one arguing that anger tends to linger when we rationalize it, and one encouraging readers to be accountable to others in their process of anger management.

This is a helpful book for those who experience anger in any of its various manifestations, which is really all of us. Some people's anger causes more problems than others, but I would go so far as to say that none of us is completely healthy in all the ways we express anger. We could all stand to grow in this area. One important thing to point out about this book is that Carter and Minirth write from a Christian perspective. Thus, this book will be most helpful to those readers who are Christians, or who are open to allowing the God Christians worship to help them express their anger appropriately and productively.

Anger counseling at home.

My husband asked me to order this book after he realized anger was playing too large a part in his daily life.
I have noticed such a huge change in him, and so has he. The book identified the triggers and gave him options. We are sharing a more peaceful time and he appears to be a much happier man.
He uses the book because he made the decision, not any one else. He found the title mentioned on the cover of my book for depression by the same author.

This is a good book for working through understanding underlying anger issues

This is a good book for working through understanding underlying anger issues. It does have a strong religious bent, so be prepare for that. If your beliefs are not the same as the author's beliefs, you can still garner very valuable information from this book. I found that this book also offers good information for working on one's assertiveness. There are lots of exercises to get you really thinking about how anger manifests in your life, and how you deal with it. It works you through developing and applying better ways to handle anger issues. It does reach back to attempt to help you understand the origin of your anger and what may really be bringing it about. This book is a thorough examination of issues of anger within yourself, and how you can better deal with it.

About the Author
David M. Kennedy received his Ph.D. from Yale University. He is the Donald J. McLachlan Professor of History Emeritus and co-director of The Bill Lane Center for the Study of the North American West at Stanford University. His first book, BIRTH CONTROL IN AMERICA: THE CAREER OF MARGARET SANGER, was honored with both the Bancroft Prize and the John Gilmary Shea Prize. He has won numerous teaching awards at Stanford, where he teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses in American political, diplomatic, intellectual, and social history, and in American literature. Dr. Kennedy published a volume in the OXFORD HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES, FREEDOM FROM FEAR: THE AMERICAN PEOPLE IN DEPRESSION AND WAR, 1929--1945, for which he was honored with the 2000 Pulitzer Prize. He is an elected fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and of the American Philosophical Society, and he served from 2002--2011 on the board of the Pulitzer Prizes.

Lizabeth Cohen received her Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. She is the Howard Mumford Jones Professor of American Studies in the history department and the Dean of the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University. In 2007--2008 she was the Harmsworth Professor of American History at Oxford University. Previously, she taught at New York University and Carnegie Mellon University. The author of many articles and essays, Dr. Cohen was a Pulitzer Prize finalist for her first book, MAKING A NEW DEAL: INDUSTRIAL WORKERS IN CHICAGO, 1919--1939, for which she later won the Bancroft Prize and the Philip Taft Labor History Award. She authored A CONSUMERS' REPUBLIC: THE POLITICS OF MASS CONSUMPTION IN POSTWAR AMERICA (2003), and is currently writing SAVING AMERICA'S CITIES: ED LOGUE AND THE STRUGGLE TO RENEW URBAN AMERICA IN THE SUBURBAN AGE, on urban renewal in American cities after World War II. At Harvard, she has taught courses in 20th century American history, with particular attention to the intersection of social and cultural life and politics. She now oversees the Radcliffe Institute, a major center for scholarly research, creative arts, and public programs.

Content And The Actual Product

Judging by the other comments below, I think this book is purchased for academic reasons mainly. The content itself is straight forward (talking about American history from the post-civil war to modern day. Being a general history textbook, it covers a lot of areas but not a lot of details (depends on the topic). If you want to learn key events in history, that is fine, but if you want to know in depth detail like what was the actual plan to overthrow Queen Liliuokalani then I would suggest looking else where. The book is pretty objective it is not jingoistic or revisionist, so if you did not know much about the post-civil war to modern day American history before, reading this will give you the general idea.

When ordering this books you get what is expected, which is good. Lastly, if you are in college, please make sure you get the right edition of your assigned book unless your instructor says otherwise.
