In my three decades of Pharmacology & Therapeutics, bulky and laborious good ole Goodman & Gilman is no stranger to me.

This on the contrary is a very pertinent and concise distillate of above. It is awesomely readable and invaluable for both for the practicing clinician & pharmacist alike.

Accordingly rate this book by far as the BEST book I have ever read on this topic, in 30 years !.

Great information - tiny font

Excellent well written textbook! Easy to read, yet detailed information provided. My only complaint is that that book I received is very small and has tiny font which is hard for me to read. It looks like they took a normal sized textbook and shrunk it down into a pocket sized paperback edition so the font had to shrink as well.

About the Author

Saraju Mohanty, Ph.D., is a faculty member in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of North Texas, where he directs the NanoSystem Design Laboratory (NSDL). He obtained a Ph.D. in computer science and engineering from the University of South Florida in 2003, a master’s degree in systems science and automation from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India, in 1999, and a bachelor’s degree (honors) in electrical engineering from Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology, Bhubaneswar, India, in 1995. Dr. Mohanty’s research is in low-power, high-performance nanoelectronics. He is an author of hundreds of peer-reviewed journal and conference publications. Dr. Mohanty holds many U.S. patents. He has advised/co-advised many Ph.D. dissertations and numerous master’s theses. Dr. Mohanty currently serves as the chair of the Technical Committee on Very Large Scale Integration (TCVLSI), IEEE Computer Society (IEEE-CS). He serves on the editorial board of many peer-reviewed international journals, including IET-CDS Journal, Elsevier Integration Journal, and Journal of Low Power Electronics. Dr. Mohanty has served as a guest editor for many journals, including ACM Journal on Emerging Technologies in Computing Systems (JETC) for an issue titled “New Circuit and Architecture-Level Solutions for Multidiscipline Systems,” August 2012, and IET Circuits, Devices & Systems (CDS) for an issue titled “Design Methodologies for Nanoelectronic Digital and Analog Circuits,” September 2013. He serves on the organizing and program committee of several international conferences. Dr. Mohanty is a senior member of the IEEE and ACM.

THE book for mixed-signal IC design

DISCLAIMER: I am a colleague and collaborator of the author. Still, I wouldn’t give high praises if I didn’t think the book was worth it.

This is THE book for those (students as well as practicing engineers) that want to get up to speed with mixed-signal (analog and digital) IC design as practiced today, namely in the nanometer scale. It differs from other, older VLSI books in two aspects: 1) it covers both digital AND analog IC design (usually separate subjects) and 2) not only nanoCMOS but other state-of-the-art technologies (graphene, carbon nanotubes, memristors etc.) are illustrated.

At nearly 800 letter-size pages, it is a reference and textbook into one. The text is lavishly illustrated with hundreds of figures (unfortunately in black and white – I’d be happy to see a color edition), tables and plots. There are 12 chapters, each with one hundred or more references at the end.

The topics cover the entire spectrum of mixed-signal IC design: starting from general system description all the way to advanced topics such as design for excellence and metamodeling. A small sample of topics includes: application of nanoelectronic systems, parasitics, thermals and yield, oscillators and PLLs, analog/digital conversion, sensors, most currently used memory technologies, system design flows, system and circuit level simulation, process variation awareness and finally, design space exploration and optimization using surrogate modeling (metamodeling) techniques.

This is one textbook that will remain current for years to come.

This book is a MUST for VLSI students, especially for mixed signal processing, but not limited to it. It discusses the most recent topics in VLSI from application point of view. It gives an in-depth idea for modeling in different platforms from Simscape, Simulink to SPICE. Various case studies have been considered while explaining the topics, along with their design. It has covered various process technologies from 180 nm to 45 nm, along with recent state-in-art topics like Memristor, FinFET, CNT and others. The AMS processing has been covered in details from different hierarchical level and each level has been analyzed in depth. For a research students, this book is a perfect place to start from. It gives all required idea about what is in current research and shows challenges and possible research areas. I have gone through this book and I found it very good.

This is a must have book for all the students. It is very helpful especially for the Masters students. This book covers almost all the topics from basics to the recently invented FinFET, Graphene FET and memristor. This book alone gives a student what he wants in the area of VLSI and Mixed signal system design. It has covered all the technologies. Each chapter, with its references, guides the reader to numerous published papers on each topic for indepth knowledge. For research this is the best place to start from.

Exhaustive treatment of soft matter physics!

Given my training as an engineer in undergraduate avatar and as a polymer scientist in my graduate school (enrolled into a PhD program now), I find this book a challenging endevour. It presupposes in-depth knowledge of quantum mechanics and statistical mechanics, and the chapters are written in a style which makes it most beneficial/suitable for Physics graduate students. Nonetheless, since every serious student in material science and polymer physics must indeed become comfortable with the theoretical concepts underlying soft matter physics, this book is a delightful (and hardcore!) introduction to the concepts of correlation functions, symmetry laws, conservation principles, phase transitions and critical phenomenon, topological defects, etc. The book by RAL Jones can provide a quick introduction to phenomenon and principles encountered in the book. But to master the trade, to become comfortable with notation used in papers, to understand the math, to make yourself a soft matter physicist, this book provides matter, paradigms and principles in comprehensive manner.

Specifically. this book is an essential reading for people studying physics of crystals, liquid crystals, quasi-crystals, amorphous materials, polymers and magnetically ordered systems. Specific chapters/sections on energy and potentials, structure and scattering, mean field theories, renormalization group theory, generalized elasticity, dynamics with emphasis on correlation & response functions, hydrodynamics with discussion on broken symmetries and fluctuation-dissipation formalism, and on wall, kinks and solitons are written with advanced readers in mind. Each chapter and topic can be appreaciated by additional reading from a textbook each in Statistical Mechanics (Pathria), Electrodynamics (Slater and Frank), Quantum Mechanics, liquid crystals (Chandrashekar or de gennes, polymers (Doi, de gennes) and scattering (neutron-Higgins, light-Pecora). Like potential readers, I am myself a student, just starting on this daunting but worthwhile study of condensed matter.

Wonderful and deep approach to soft condensed matter physics

This textbook's main originality is its unusual mixture of latest experimental facts and observations in soft condensed matter with deep theoretical concepts and tools.

Exactly solved models of statistical physics pervades the text which also contains a good discussion on real-space renormalization methods and field-theoretical approaches to condensed matter problems.

The chapter on topological defects and excitations is particularly welcomed.

May not be particularly suited for self-study as some results are not always carefully derived and the exercises can prove quite hard to solve.

A prior exposure to phase transition phenomena is recommended.

Fascinating, Practical, and Instantly Useful

As soon as I had finished reading the first few pages, I knew I'd found a gem. This book sets forth to explain how we as the role models and guides can help children learn the skills that they need to become successful adults. One of my favorite parts in this book is on page 248: "Children want to be happy and have a nice day. Some children just don't know how."

If you struggle with "that" child with rough social interactions, has a hard time focusing, gives up easily on tasks, tantrums at transitions, pushes or hits others, appears to have never learned how to take turns, etcetera, etcetera, then this will be a very valuable tool. The basic premise is that children need to learn collaboration, adaptability, self-regulation, contribution, and feel attached and like they belong, just as much as (if not SO MUCH MORE than) they need to learn math, reading, and writing. These are skills like any other, and while we would not punish a child for not yet knowing multiplication tables, neither should we punish a child for not knowing how to gently join into play with several children at once.

I bought this book for a class that I will be taking in the fall, but I have already finished reading it and I have introduced many of the ideas into my preschool classroom. I look forward to going through it again in the fall.

A valuable addition to any teacher's toolkit

This is an insightful, clear and practical guide. One of the best parts? The appendices with scripts: "Instead of saying . . ." "Try . . ." or "When a child says . . ." "Try saying . . . " The change in teachers' perception and habits of speech, may "give children the social and emotional tools they need to grow and thrive on their own."

A must have for individuals working with young children!

Jenna Bilmes approach to suppporting young children's social-emotional development and competence is very different from the traditional behavior managment approach and makes so much sense. Why should social-emotional development be supported differently than other areas of a development. Isnt' all development about developing skills? She provides many easily implemented strategies.

As soon as the concrete and dirt have been rammed the form is withdrawn and the trench then loose filled up to the point, D, at the bottom of the planking. With this type of construction old pipe may be used, as it is surrounded by concrete through which no water can leak. The work can be carried on even when the trench is wet, as the pipe may serve to lead away the water during the progress of the work and the concrete can be placed in water. Two or three of these portable forms are required so that they can be moved ahead as the work advances. The most satisfactory method of executing the work shown in Fig. 214 is to build the suction well before disturbing the outside ground. With this well in operating condition the trench can be dug from the well toward the waterway and the pipe laid as fast as the dirt is removed. This will allow the water in the trench to drain to the well, from which it can be removed by the regular pump or a temporary one. It is important that the joints in the pipe be tight if they are to be encased in concrete, as water passing through the fresh concrete to the inside of the pipe will wash out the cement and leave only the loose material. very effective guide

I never knew that tilapia could be cooked in so many ways. I know a little about tilapia cooking and how delicious tilapia can be when prepared and cooked. This book has even made me more interested in preparing new dishes. Simple recipes means simple preparations and that just makes cooking more fun and enjoyable. It does not require a lot of complicated instructions. This book has been a very effective guide in cooking this amazing fish that is loved by many people.

I don't like fish but the husband wants to eat more of ...

First of all, I don't like fish but the husband wants to eat more of it so I tried the Cajun dill recipe with salmon. It was the best fish I ever had, Also, the book was nicely edited with each recipe on one page (not running together like some recipe books) with clear instructions. I'll be checking out more of this writer's books.

I always will be. As I said, I swore the oath. The Mafia is more than a crime organization; it's the life you live. I served time because of a wire-wearing rat. Now I'm writing this book and sharing information about a secret organization that is no longer secret because the rats have spilled everything. So you understand, this book is not written by an informant who wants to look good now that he has cooperated with the government... ...I never cooperated.  After completing a long prison sentence, wiseguy, Frank Palmeri, shares his thoughts about the decline of the New York Mafia. Palmeri discusses the basic tenets of the Mafia organization, including the code of silence that so many made men discarded when they decided to cooperate with the federal government. In turn, the US government systematically deconstructed the Mafia using the 1970 Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organization Act (RICO). Palmeri describes the history of the Mafia, including the creation of the original Five Families of New York (Genovese, Bonanno, Gambino, Lucchese, and Profaci, which later became the Colombo Family) by Charlie "Lucky" Luciano in 1931. The author reveals a series of poor leadership decisions, as well as unnecessary and "unapproved" murders within the organization that eventually led to prominent members from all of the Five Families to turn on each other in order to bargain for more lenient sentences or protection from the feds. The basic structure and chain of command in the crime organization is described. Palmeri also calls out the failures and missteps of Mafia bosses and underbosses, including John Gotti, John Gotti Jr., and Sammy the Bull Gravano, which later made it easy for the government... ...to arrest and convict many prominent made men. The main point of Bugs, Bull, & Rats speaks directly to the title of the book. Palmeri blames the breakdown of the organization from 3000 made men in the '70s to fewer than 500 members in the current day to the betrayal of weak-minded members... many of whom Palmeri believes should never have been inducted into the organization.

Nice read, not entirely accurate.

Read this little book after seeing Capeci's advertisement for it.
Nice read, I don't regret it, but there were too many factual innacuracies for me to believe that a "made man" wrote it.

I'm not talking about stories from 40 years ago that are largely hearsay or personal accounts-- I mean the dates and timelines don't add up.
I don't see how any made man out of New York of recent history would have printed some of the errors contained here, like, that Joe Massino and Vincent Basciano were cellmates, or that Cicale went to trial with Basciano and flipped during it, not before it.

But perhaps the author made those errors on purpose? So he could play the dunce if he was ever asked if he wrote it, saying that those errors are proof he didn't, that he wouldn't have gotten them wrong?

Who knows. Either way I liked the spirit of this book, what a man would and would not do, and to hell with the excuses all these cooperators come up with when asked why they turned.

I hope this author writes more books.

PS I liked how the author wrote that Gravano had nothing to do with the Castellano hit, I think Gravano was lying through his teeth to make himself a more important witness and so he could sell more copies of his book etc later on. Gotti wouldn't have had Gravano in the car with him, I believe he would have had someone from his own crew in Queens, especially since Gravano says that the shooters were from it.

Author Frank Palmeri is a made man in the mafia, served a stretch in prison, and has now gone straight. He laments the demise of the sacred oath of omerta which today means nothing in the mafia with so many members becoming the much-despised "rats" which the author detests. After reading this account one has to wonder why anyone would want to join the mafia since there appears to be at least one murder on each page. Your future is either a lengthy prison sentence or an early grave.

Author Palmeri labels John Gotti as a big mouth who was his own worst enemy and Sammy "The Bull" Gravano as a "rat" of the first order. Palmeri considers a man to be one who serves his prison sentence and keeps his mouth shut in regard to any information he may know that would send others to prison.

This book is a quick read with murders galore and the gang is all here most of whom are now in the past tense.

This is by far the best first-person account of Family life out there

This is by far the best first-person account of Family life out there. The intriguing story that unfolds for the reader is well-written: concise, descriptive, and highly engaging (this reader couldn't set it down). The author's experience shows: his written voice is authoritative and his story packs a wallop. There are many My Life In The Life books but they are invariably told by those who sold out their colleagues to cut their own losses, or those who got religion. This author disavows nothing himself, and he spills no beans not already revealed by the individuals he discusses. The reader learns more about this, as well as about many customs and traditions which are not always so clear (or so genuine) as viewed in the media, which often exaggerates and embroiders the facts. This book is by far the best I've seen in this rather overpopulated (and unfortunately often mediocre) genre. Highly recommend!
