A real instruction book for believers on A.A. history, Bible roots, and Bible study

A while ago I wrote a brief review of this book. Then I spotted a review which talked about "tolerance" but never even seemed to mention this book or its contents. But time marches on. Since my first review, there has been an intense new interest in A.A.'s Biblical roots and history. Here are a few of the things that have risen on the scene: (1) Regular heritage seminars each year by Dick B. at the Wilson House where Bill Wilson was born and where he went to Sunday School and then nearby lived with his grandfather Griffith. (2) Several nationwide A.A. history conferences sprang up where the real roots were presented by Dick B., by Dr. Bob's son Smitty, by Ray G.--archivist at Dr. Bob's Home, and by several veteran A.A. women who had not been called on before. (3) Dick was asked to speak at Archives 2000, the event at the International Convention in Minneapolis. His topic--the roots of A.A. (4) Several websites, including four of Dick's own, began posting all kinds of important truths about the real early A.A. and pulling no punches when it came to accurate reporting. Some included NICD, aabibliography, anonymousone.com, mental health matters, silkworth.net, Bible Study Notes, and others. (5) More excellent studies by people like Mel B., Hartigan, Tom White, Susan Cheever, Nan Robertson, Raphael, and the biographers of Silkworth and Lois Wilson. (6) The actual Bill Wilson autobiography that had gathered dust for years was covered in Dick B.'s Turning Point and then published in full by Hazelden. There have been lots more appearances of history. But all these gave rise to the need for a guidebook that would tell people where to start as they picked up their Bibles and wanted their studies to bear the same kind of fruit the early AAs plucked from this "absolutely essential" source. Dick has written other titles on this subject since, but this book stands as a one-stop start on A.A. history and the Bible AAs read and you can read--as I have.

A specific Bible Study Guide from early AA for Today's AAs

I've long awaited this book. 9 months to be exact. It was to have been a manual for studying the Bible within A.A. and other 12 Step programs. It was delayed because of the author's surgery. At the end, it became a review of what early AAs said about Bible study, about what they studied in the Bible, about what the Bible itself is, about the Bible's statements as to our Creator and His name Yahweh and His son Jesus Christ, and then about what it has to offer in terms of releases we all need--from fear, guilt, shame, failure, despair, loneliness, and so on. The appendices are specific, scholarly studies of God's name Yahweh, of the parts of the Bible Dr. Bob considered essential, and about success in A.A. yesterday compared to today. Very useful!

Good Book - Only if it is read

I bought this for my Brother in Law. The last time I spoke with him, he had not even taken it out of the box. What I read of it, I really enjoyed. I
read my Bible very frequently and also have the greatest respect for the "Big Book" and the writings of "Bill W." although I don't have a drinking problem, the 12 Step Program can be applied to any addiction, including worry, which affects me. This book deals with comparisons in Scripture that The A.A. Big Book uses, along with Bible verses and examples to bring the Bible and the Big Book closer together.
I also gave my 84 year old Brother in Law, who gets up about 10 a.m. starts drinking. Gets drunk. Goes back to bed and sleeps until 3 p.m. eats dinner, gets drunk again, goes back to sleep again, and repeats the process, day after day, week after week, month after month, year after year. He has a sitter who feeds and baths him. I am convinced he is doing this as a slow suicide mission, and has no intention of ever quitting. Pray for his salvation.

Nice taste but still want more, Please.

I enjoyed this short story as a companion to The Origin series but I am still waiting for the next book in the series to released. I mean the story on its own was rather sweet and touching but I'm not sure how it fits in the whole scheme of the The Origin series plot except that the main character Luke Sullivan was touched or infected by Daniel Johnson, who is the main character from The Origin. Which if you haven't read the Origin in a while or may have forgot the twist in the end where Daniel realizes he has all these superpowers and seems to be invincible, now he can also infect or awaken powers in certain people.

So that is where this short story start us off with a random stranger on a train trying to jack some blind woman's cell phone. The guy, Luke, the reader is never told but it is implied that he has at one point in his life, must have been in contact with Daniel in order to have picked up the power to heal people physically, because he is shown to be able to make the blind woman see, at least momentarily when touching her. There begins the cute love story that the author narrates in where the character Luke comes into his own in figuring out who he is and what he is now that he begins realizes this ability that he didn't have before; and now that he has this healing touch what is he, a criminal, to do with it?

Overall like this short story but I'm still anxiously awaiting the sequel The Forsaken which is supposed to be out in 2013, so here's hoping it comes out really really soon and perhaps the author will tie in more stories like Luke's and other characters, who had their lives changed for the better thanks to Daniel's touch integrated into the next book.

Though a stretch realistic-wise, it's forgiving if you like a short sweet story. I found its unconventional charm refreshing, though, and the story's best aspect. DO NOT read; however, if you're looking for a realistic story, or a lot of action.

Got me through Shanghai and Beijing with ease

I just did three weeks in Shanghai and Beijing in April as a tourist. Fortunately, the latest edition of the Eyewitness Travel Guide had just come out. Both cities are changing so rapidly, it was nice to have the latest version, e.g., subways. I've relied on Eyewitness guides for travel in Europe and this was the first time I used one for Asia. I like their architectural focus since I'm an architectural historian. And being an old fogey, I still go with a paper version, especially behind the Great Firewall of China where certain websites are not always accessible.

The book did very well covering what I needed and getting me around. I had bought it specifically for the laminated tear out map of the two cities, which was really nice, especially for the subways. However, I ended up relying mostly on the GPS function of my smart phone to pinpoint exactly where I was. The book of course doesn't cover everything, so I supplemented with Lonely Planet's Discover China, which was also very good. Most importantly, both books are very good at preparing for the journey.

I can't think of anything to add or subtract from the book, which is a good sign. There could always be more but weight is a concern with any book. This one is a little lighter weight than the Lonely Planet China, but then again, it only covers Shanghai and Beijing. With electronic versions, weight of course, wouldn't matter.

The Lure of Shanghai

I spent 6 days in Shanghai. It was organized Chaos and with the language barrier I was often lost. I did not want to be afraid to venture out and using this book really helped me pinpoint and navigate neighborhoods. The map of Shanghai was not complete. The entire side of town where my hotel was located was not shown, but I would think that is because Shanghai is developing so quickly it likely did not exist when the book was published. My hotel was not open at the time the book was published. All in all it was my go-to that got me out of the hotel to experience the city which I found facisinating. Can't wait to go back.

Never DK Eyewitness again, I stay with Lonely Planet

The information is minimal and badly organized. I usually use Lonely Planet for my trips and this time since I was looking for a guide for both Beijing and Shanghai, I decided to buy DK Eyewitness and I have to say this will be my last time buying a guide from them. For example, you are in a neighborhood, you don't have internet connection, and want to find a place to eat. There are of course recommendations in the book (somewhere in the end) and there is no way that you can find thier locations, using the address and their map. Lonely Planet numbers its bars/restaurants etc and use the same number on the map which can be found around the same pages. I can go on for more ... bottom line: never DK Eyewitness guide for me.

This book is packed with information in ‘layman’s terms’ – @we ordinary (non-medical) people’ can then start to understand different types of faints that are being experienced or witnessed. The book can get very technical in parts, but not overly, regarding the heart, brain and systems. The Fainting Phenomenon book by Blair Grub should be in every surgery in the UK, it is a must that every Dr should have to hand. This is also a very good book for anyone who faints, be they patient, parents or carers, it will set them off on the road to ask the right questions with medical people to obtain a diagnosis for faints to put people (old or young) who suffer from this phenomenon at ease.
It is a must read and should be a best seller in every UK surgery and hospital!

About the Author
Blair P Grubb, MD, is a Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics at the Medical College of Ohio, in Toledo. A native of Baltimore, Maryland, Dr Grubb joined the Medical College’s faculty in 1988, after completing training in cardiovascular disease and electrophysiology at Pennsylvania State University. He has been involved in research into the causes of fainting and automatic nervous system disorders since 1988.

Dr Grubb has written well over 130 scientific papers and is co-editor of a textbook for physicians on fainting (Syncope: Mechanisms and Management 2E, Published June 2005). He received the University of Maryland’s Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1994 and the Medical College’s Dean’s Award for Teaching excellence in 1996.

A bit dated, but otherwise an excellent resource

This is an excellent book on 'why people faint and what to do about it', written by a physician who specializes in this area.

The level of technical detail is substantial, but most patients and caregivers should be able to understand the book, since the writing is clear and straightforward. The book may also be useful to general physicians caring for patients experiencing disabling and/or recurrent fainting, though of course more detailed resources are available for physicians.

This second edition dates to 2007, so it would be nice to have a more recent third edition. I also wouldn't mind the book being longer and more detailed, but I understand the need to keep the book accessible for people with limited biomedical background.

Until a third edition is released, this book will remain a key resource for its target audience.

Really Good Information

I bought this book after I had fainted several times and was scheduled for a tilt table test. It is a good book written by an expert that my own doctor recognized, and it helped me understand the test results and diagnosis. Concise and easy to read, it is a valuable resource for anyone who lives with vasovagal syncope.

Not only is he knowledgable about fainting and it's causes, he can explain the conditions without the crutch of medical jargon. Full of maps, but it's also a (very) compact textbook. Occasionally there are some other pictures - probably as part of the textbook part. Good compainion for the other item I recommend (The Encyclopedia of World History, Peter N. Strearns). Note: I'm not using the book for study/school.

Atlas of World History

Much interesting information about our globe, how "civilization" grew, changed. The changing bounderies and cultures. Easy to read, Good maps and illustrations. A book to read a chapter (usually two pages) or so, and sleep. Good for an understanding of our Ancestors (for Genealogy. May help "going" across the Ocean for famly searching or at least understanding the geo-politics. ETR.

Funny!

Last of the Red Hot Lovers.

I bought this play because I was assigned a part for my adult acting class. (I was given the role of Bobbi Michele from Act II.) All I can say is wow! Neil Simon is a master at dialogue writing. The play as a whole is some funny stuff, but especially Act II when Barney and Bobbi smoke marijuana together. If you've never read Neil Simon's work, I can highly recommend this as a starting point.
