A little pricey ... but totally worth it

At first I was put off by the price (any book that has to put a comma in the purchase price scares me a little, call me frugal). I reluctantly bought a copy; I was doubtful it would be worth the purchase price. Boy, was I shocked! By page 195 I was hooked, I could not put it down. Upon completion, I do have to admit to experiencing a little buyer's remorse, but I chalk that up to the usual low of "missing" a book once you finish it. I give it four stars, and the only reason I couldn't give it the full 5 was due to the book costing over three thousand dollars.

NOTE: I like hardcovers, but you may want to consider the paperback on this one and save yourself $3,815.

Stephen Janis is an award winning investigative journalist whose work has won acclaim in both print and television. As the Senior Investigative Reporter for the now defunct Baltimore Examiner he won two Maryland DC Delaware Press Association Awards for his work on the number of unsolved murders in Baltimore and the killings of prostitutes. Great read

Steve Tabeling is one of the most honest and respected people ever to serve in Maryland law enforcement. His knowledge of 4th Amendment law rivals even the most experienced criminal attorney. His latest book takes the reader on a fascinating journey that exposes the gritty underbelly of urban crime and decay. The failed policies of politicians, whose only goal in life is to be re-elected, are illustrated as causative of the chaos that Tabeling and his fellow officers have to deal with on a daily basis. The book also gives the reader hope, that honest & dedicated law enforcement people like Tabeling actually still exist.

Intense and insightful, couldn't put it down!

This is a gripping account of one Baltimore City police officer's experience in the field. I had to read it in one sitting because I couldn't put it down. The book is written so that you can feel this officer's frustration, triumphs and, at times, horror at what he has witnessed. If you watched The Wire, or live in Baltimore, or are interested in these insider accounts of city crime, this is a MUST READ.

About the Author
Gary Paul Green is a professor in the Department of Community & Environmental Sociology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a community development specialist in the Center for Community & Economic Development at the University of Wisconsin-Extension. Green received his Ph.D. from the University of Missouri-Columbia. His research, teaching, and outreach at the University of Wisconsin has focused on community, workforce and economic development issues. He is author of Finance Capital and Uneven Development (Westview Press), Asset Building and Community Development (Sage Publications) and Workforce Development Networks in Rural Areas: Building the High Road (Edward Elgar Publishing) and a co-editor of Amenities and Rural Development: Theory, Methods and Public Policy (Edward Elgar Publishing). He has served as an advisor on community development issues in New Zealand, South Korea, Uganda and Ukraine.

good as far as it goes

This is a college level textbook, apparently. Now I happen to like college textbooks, and I love to read. Gary seems to be paralleling what John Kretzmann and John McKnight are doing, for example in Building Communities from the Inside Out: A Path Toward Finding and Mobilizing a Community's Assets. This book is useful. This book does recognize that we are going to have to shift out of the Newtonian/Cartesian fragmented paradigm, into something more systems oriented, as in Walk Out Walk On: A Learning Journey into Communities Daring to Live the Future Now (BK Currents). That is useful. What I want to say, is that colleges really need to get their students out into the community, the way Muhammad Yunus did, in Banker To The Poor: Micro-Lending and the Battle Against World Poverty. We also need books for people who don't read much, who will probably never go to college, who have limited time to help their communities. I think of for example Deeply Woven Roots: Improving the Quality of Life in Your Community, How to Improve your Community Como Mejorar su comunidad:: Over 30 ways to improve your community, quickly, even if you are working by yourself, don't ... had training, and have no idea where to start, and Have You Lost Your Tribe?. Outsiders coming in can only support what already exists, locally. We have to find more ways to support local leaders. This book is far better than any college textbook available when I was in college. I am amazed that I am apparently the first reviewer, other than the person happy with their order of course.

Group topics include the following: Introduction to Positive Psychology, Meaning and Purpose, Strengths and Virtues, Gratitude, Resilience, Pleasure and Positive Experience, Positive Thinking, Positive Interpersonal Relationships, Humor and Laughter, Happiness and Well-Being, Review of all Topics, Termination/Graduation. Great for highly educated offender groups.

I work in a psychiatric prison and use this book in some group therapy. It is one of the few books I have found that is geared toward people who are incarcerated - and the only good book I've found for long term incarceration. My clients like it, it is interesting and helpful. It is defiantly for intelligent high functioning clients though. The reason I only gave it 3 stars is because it is written at a pretty high reading level and the concepts are pretty complex. As we know, people who are incarcerated are often not the most educated individuals. I use it for the clients who are very educated and want to expand their mind. I can not use it on clients who have a low level of education they just do not get it and get very frustrated .

Great Group Material

It's hard finding group material that addresses the challenges of long term incarceration and/those who have received a death sentence. I have been using this book for the past several weeks in my group and the patients have responded positively to it, it gives them material to think about, and concepts/suggestions they can implement.
