I had always been horrible at trying to decipher the steps in accounting

I ordered this book for a graduate level managerial accounting course. Prior to this course, I had always been horrible at trying to decipher the steps in accounting. Needless to say, this text broke the information down in layman's terms, and I got an 'A' in the course. I was going to resell this text, but I think I may just keep it on hand for future reference.

It does the job

Using this book for a master's class and thankfully it is much more explanatory than many other books I've had for graduate courses. Considering it's been many years since I've approached any type of accounting course this one doesn't force you to double up on remedial resources to grasp the subject matter. The illustrations and examples are not necessarily plentiful or repetitive as and undergrad text would be but they are clear and sufficient.

Training resources for Carrier Ethernet professional certification tend to assume significant background knowledge and focus on mastering the details needed to pass an exam over core fundamentals and motivations. This book is designed to complement such material, focusing instead on explaining the big picture, the core background technologies, the context, the motivations, and the concepts that underpin Carrier Ethernet. The main goal is to impart a strong foundation for understanding Carrier Ethernet in a general sense. A secondary goal is to offer insights into the evolution of networking technology and the issues that surround and motivate Carrier Ethernet. Chapter 1 provides a synopsis of the book and a brief explanation of Carrier Ethernet. Chapter 2 explains Ethernet in local area networking, starting from first principles and simple contexts and gradually building up to include MAC bridging and VLAN bridging. Chapter 3 describes traditional Telecom technology and wide area networking solutions prior to Carrier Ethernet. Chapter 4 provides a high-level overview of Carrier Ethernet. The appendix includes supportive details related to various of topics covered in the book. This 2nd Edition of the book was published mainly to change the book's subtitle.

About the Author
Jon Kieffer (MEF-CECP) is a principal technical writer working for Fujitsu Network Communications since 2001. Previous to that, Jon taught software engineering at the University of Hull, U.K., and mechanical engineering at the Australian National University. Jon holds BS, MS, and PhD degrees in mechanical engineering and has authored 12 refereed journal articles and more than 30 conference papers in the fields of mechanical and controls engineering. The MEF has recognized Jon as an outstanding contributor for contributions to the MEF-CECP program in 2013, 2014 and 2015. In 2015, Jon received the MEF Marketing Committee Editors Award for co-editing the MEF white paper Understanding Bandwidth Profiles in MEF 6.2 Service Definitions. Yongchao Fan (CCIE R&S #6369) is a product support engineer working for Fujitsu Network Communications since 1999 and previously worked for IBM as a global services engineer. Yongchao holds BS and MS degrees in computer science and has extensive experience with various networking technologies and real-world networks.

This book provides background for understanding Carrier Ethernet. It covers a lot of ground and is more technical than I expected, but it's easy to follow because of the author's accessible writing style and the many illustrations. Overall: great value.

About the Author
Edmund Burke (1729-1797) was born in Dublin and educated at Trinity College. A lifelong member of Parliament, Burke was the author of A Philosophical Enquiry into the Sublime and Beautiful, A Vindication of Natural Society, and Reflections on the Revolution in France.
Isaac Kramnick was born in 1938 and educated at Harvard University, where he received a B.A. degree in 1959 and a Ph.D. in 1965, and at Peterhouse, Cambridge. He has taught at Harvard, Brandeis, Yale and Cornell, where he is now Professor of Government. He is married to Miriam Brody Kramnick and lives in Ithaca, New York. Among his publications are Bolingbroke and His Circle, The Rage of Edmund Burke and numerous articles on eighteenth century topics. He has edited William Godwin’s Enquiry Concerning Political Justice, The Federalist Papers by James Madison, Alexander Hamilton and John Jay and, with Michael Foot, The Thomas Paine Reader for the Penguin Classics. Most recently he is the author, with Barry Sheerman, MP, of Laski: A Lift on the Left.

Broad but emasculated coverage

"The Portable Edmund Burke" is useful in supplying a number of pieces not otherwise easily obtainable. It, like most books in the Viking Portable Library series, is missing the notes and especially the index that many people would have found useful. To make room for the 47 selections, several have been severely abridged. "Reflections on the Revolution is France" is whittled to leave only about 30% of it. Anyone needing this should look to a full-length treatment. Good ones include the Yale edition of Frank M. Turner, which has an excellent index, occasional notes, and several first-class essas; and Oxford World's Classic edition of L.G. Mitchell, which also has a helpful index and good notes. The speech on conciliation with America is similar chopped to a mere shadow of itself. The Lamont edition is not easily obtainable, which is a pity, but the notes and index of the Cambridge edition of Ian Harris will do well enough for most students. 'A Vindication of Natural Society' survives better (about half of it survives in this edition), but again the Harris edition is a better choice.

If you want a wide picture of Burke's writing, this text is probably for you. If you want to read any of his important texts, then choose something else.

Amputated rather than edited...

Burke's most important work "Reflections on the Revolution in France" is reduced from nearly 200 pages to 60 pages in this volume. Yet nowhere in the book does the editor describe what he selected or what he dropped, or the basis for his decisions.

Comparing my copy of "Reflections.." to this chopped version I found that Kramnick had dropped passages that were highly insightful.

When I discovered this, I could no longer be confident that the other works were not similarly mangled. I will now search for an anthology of works that is more respectful of the originals (or at least one where the editor is more open about his approach).

Thematic is best

Presenting Edmund Burke thematically is perhaps the only way to really approach Burke, as Conor Cruise O'Brien or Russell Kirk (Burke's best biographers) would probably agree. So unlike `On Empire, Liberty, and Reform,' which is chronological, the portable Edmund Burke instead tackles Burke under the themes of America, Ireland, India, and the French Revolution, and a couple other sub-themes, with invaluable commentary. By the end of the book, Burke is better enveloped here than in most biographies, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

About the Author
Dr Keith Coaley is a chartered occupational and clinical psychologist, having many years of experience as an applied psychologist, trainer and lecturer at both HE and university levels. After a first undergraduate degree, he did a second degree in psychology with the Open University before a Master’s degree at Cardiff University and another later in forensic and legal psychology at Leicester University. He was awarded his PhD for his research in stress, health and job performance at Manchester. Having extensive experience of psychological assessment in practice, he has researched and published on topics relating to the fields of psychometrics and assessment. He has experience of work in Human Resources, in consultancy and in the National Health Service and prison settings, and has worked in the UK, Ireland, the Far East and Africa.

I moved to L.A. from Indiana to pursue everyone's Hollywood dream of becoming an actor. I had, and continue to have, reasonable expectations. I understood it was imperative to learn the business side of things. You need to know not just how to act, but as the book says, how to become an actor. I read this book my first month in L.A. It provides invaluable advice on topics including resumes, cover letters, auditions and representation, among other things. I highly recommend this book to any and all actors out there. For new actors, you will receive necessary practical information. And for experienced actors, it never hurts to have as many perspectives on the business as possible.

I have enjoyed all of Mary's books, but this one is my favorite thus far. I think that it will resonate with anyone who has ever been madly in love with someone they cannot be with. The dilemma of where to put that energy is articulated beautifully in this book. Well, not only does the book eloquently describe the emotional turmoil associated with loving someone you cannot be with, but it also describes what is probably the best solution...

This book allowed me, in a cathartic way, to remember the pain of such a situation, and the personal renaissance that can spring from it as well. Loved it.
