The Royal Marines Commandos Fitness & Survival Skills

This illustrated guide to fitness and survival techniques outlines their intensive program of free-form exercise (no equipment needed0. The charts measure fitness levels. This book covers all-terrain all-temperature survival training: navigation, climbing rocks and ice, crossing rivers, caring for casualties, and living off the land. It is based on the training of the Royal Marine Commando. It is a guide for hunters, campers, hikers, cross-country skiers, and anyone who wants to learn what is taught in this book. The 176 pages of this book contain sixteen chapters, an Appendix and Index. [No one has written a survival guide to list the skills needed for walking through a big city with diverse neighborhoods. This may be more relevant to many readers.]

The ‘Introduction’ to this 1987 book says the Royal Marines recruit young men between the ages of 17 and 28 from a wide variety of backgrounds, few of which have experience in outdoor activities. [Machiavelli said the best soldiers are those who worked outdoors at physical labor.] Recruits are given thirty weeks of training and pass some of the toughest physical tests for soldiers. The Royal Marines who were victorious in the Falklands were just out of training. These military skills also apply to civilians who hunt, hike, ski, and do similar sports; or those who want “to keep in shape”. [One method it to avoid watching televison or reading books.] The author warns against trying these commando skills unless you are well above average in fitness, and then only in the company of those who have experience and safety equipment. Reading about an activity does not in itself prepare you for the real thing. Its background knowledge can be useful if you are ever stranded in the country at night in winter’s cold. The ‘Appendix’ lists the clothing and equipment kit for outdoor activities that are available in England.

Chapter 1 summarizes the training that turns a recruit into a commando. Chapter 2 lists the attainments of this physical training. Today’s society rarely involves physical activity and leads to various diseases (p.14). Various tests and exercises are listed. Roads and pavements make the worst running tracks. These pages have valuable information on exercises. Chapter 3 explains why walking is the best exercise. Chapter 4 lists the best clothes for outdoor exercise. Shoes are the most important. Outer garments should be windproof and waterproof. Wool socks are best. Chapter 5 describes backpacks for carrying loads. Chapter 6 discusses the siting and use of tents. The first skill of field craft is to use a map and compass in difficult country (Chapter 7). Travel is best done on flat terrain. Navigation is important to survive in the wild (Chapter 8). An analogue watch can determine north and south in daytime. The bark of a tree shows north or south. Plants grow toward the sun. Be sure there is enough daylight t reach your goal (Chapter 9).

Be very cautious in bad weather. Outside at night in winter can be fatal without protection. There are many dangers found on high ground. Weather in mountains can change very quickly from sunny to rainy. Lightning is very dangerous (Chapter 10). Chapter 11 tells why food and water are important in very cold weather. Alcohol can be dangerous, so too overheating. Chapter 12 tells about food for energy. There are various food menus listed. Exposure can kill very quickly (Chapter 13)! You need to build a shelter quickly. Other topics are discussed, such as preparations for trouble. Chapter 14 tells about creating shelters outdoors in wintertime. An injury far from medical care can be hazardous (Chapter 15). Asphyxia and hemorrhage are the greatest dangers. The advice listed here is not a substitute for practical training and experience. Cold weather is an added danger. Chapter 16 tells about “Living Off The Land”. Being fit can allow men to function for three days. Few can trap a small animal for food. Grubs, worms, and beetles can be roasted over a fire. Nuts are the most concentrated of natural foods. Some fresh seaweed is nutritious. Young ferns’ leaves and roots are edible. Keep water purifying tablets and anti-diarrhea tablets handy.
