Palm mats and pilgrim tokens, manuscript illuminations and church frescoes, gold and enamel reliquaries and papier-mch figurines, Russian icons and Mexican murals: What makes these works of art Christian? And what, as such, distinguishes them from other works? These are the questions at the center of this book, which is at once a sumptuously illustrated survey of Christian art over time and across the globe and a probing study of what "Christian art" really means, how it functions, where it arises, and whom it serves.

Rowena Loverance draws extensively on the vast international collections of the British Museum, with its remarkable examples of Christian art in the fourth-century Roman empire, the meeting of Eastern and Western art during the Crusades, Christian missionary art and its reception in sixteenth-century Africa, India, and Japan, and twentieth-century Christian popular art from Latin America and Oceania. The Museum's collections of decorative arts yield original and lesser-known Christian iconography, allowing the author to show how Christian and other artists have responded to a variety of visual traditions. Within the European convention, the book considers the assaults of post-Renaissance scientific and philosophical discoveries and concludes with an assessment of the current state of Christian art at the beginning of the twenty-first century.

Refreshing new perspectives
By Dr. L. Murgatroyd
This is a beautiful wide-ranging book covering Christan art from the last 2000 years around the world. It is a refreshing change from the narrow, Western perspectives of most publications. Well-Informed and inspiring , it shows how the Christian message has been interpreted visually in different cultures and gives fresh insights about Christianity, cultural diversity and art. Rowena Loverance knows her stuff about art and knows how to write, and this book has been well produced, so makes a lovely gift for others as well as oneself.

The only merit is the quality of the photo reproductions
By Amazon Customer
If you subscribe to ecumenical world beliefs and don't have any interest in understanding Christian theology or sound exegesis of scripture, this is a good book for you. The author does state her religious background and hints at her bias in the beginning pages (which I greatly respected) so I knew going in that the content would be slanted to meet her presuppositions. In terms of the art she selects as examples, she drew from a large pool of artists working in different media, time periods, and cultural backgrounds so there is much diversity but all of it is tied loosely together by general themes and ideas/musings. Her explanation to include artworks that were made by artists who are not Christian but offer some commentary upon Christianity is understandable but really confuses what her point really is... which I read to be something like, for Christian art to be viable and culturally relevant, it needs to abandon the communication of theological substance and focus only on messages of moral do-goodism and embrace our new standards of autonomy and individual rights. If this is the case then ultimately there is no meaning and significance in calling something "Christian" because anything can be "christian".

What she gets horribly wrong is interpreting every work from a humanistic perspective that highlights Jesus as a social and moral teacher and obscures the claim of his true identity, the Son of God.

If a theologian, such as D.A. Carson for example, were to write a book on the significance of German Expressionism, it would be dismissed, and rightly so. This book demands the same response.

NOT AN ART BOOK!!
By W. Sockwell
I bought this book expecting the pages to be filled with beautiful plates of Christian paintings from the beginning of the Church through the Renaissance, but was deeply disappointed with what I got. Loverance, a Leftist Brit, spends much of the book heavy on text expounding on her radical Socialist political views. The talks of "man-made global warming", or "climate change", or whatever they're calling it this week, as well "empowerment of women" and issues of education and anti-gun diatribes are abound throughout the book. In fact, she even says in the introduction that this is NOT a book on the history of art! So why is it called "Christian Art" instead of "The Revival of the Communist Manifesto"? If you love far Left politics, this is your book. However, don't be deceived as I was by the title and expect a history of Christian art through the years. You will be bitterly disappointed! No wonder I found the book so cheap on Amazon!
