The Highlander's Woman (The Reckless Rockwoods Book 3), by Monica Burns

WARNING: Book contains a proud, Highlander Laird unwilling to surrender his heart a second time, and a half-Scottish heroine who, like most members of the Rockwood clan, is up to the challenge of seducing the laird she loves and making him realize she's The Highlander's Woman.

Julian MacTavish’s honor made him guard a friend’s secret. But his lies to keep that vow make it difficult to prove his faithfulness as a husband. When a terrible inferno scars Patience’s body and mind, she becomes a recluse, widening the divide between them. But it’s her lack of trust, not her disfigurement, which sends Julian home alone to Scotland convinced he’s lost her forever.

Forgiveness in the face of death comes easily to Patience MacTavish, but the thought of being a burden to her husband does not. When a twist of fate takes Julian’s sight from him, Patience returns home hoping to make amends for not having faith in him. Pity is the last thing Julian wants from anyone, especially his wife, and it’s his turn to question her sincerity. Now, Patience must convince her husband that she’s come home for no other reason than love, and to prove she’s The Highlander’s Woman

From the Author
The Highlander's Woman created a challenge for me. As it's the third book in the Reckless Rockwoods series, I had a couple of things that needed to happen. When I wrote Obsession, I knew that not every Rockwood would get their HEA. This posed a problem for me when it came to the epilogue of Obsession. I showed Louisa still in mourning, but at the time I wrote that epilogue, I didn't realize how problematic that would be.

The solution was to create an event that impacted every single member of the Rockwood family. It had to be harsh, poignant, and frightening. But most of all, it had to be something that would push Patience and Julian apart so they would have to find their way back to each other again. I believe I managed that while offering up the possibility of stories from the younger members of the Reckless Rockwoods.

Some authors plot out their books, and their series. Some are like me. We're what they call pantzers. We write by the seat of our pants without any thought as to how something is going to turn out. We're the rebels, the loose canons in the book world. We're cowboys pulling our weapons and winging our mayhem over all our characters. Suffice it to say, I'm pleased with my resolution to a number of questions about the Reckless Rockwoods. I hope you enjoy my solution, and enjoy Patience's and Julian's romance.

A Scottish love story with some twists
By Wendy Loveridge
The Highlander’s Woman is the third in The Reckless Rockwoods series but can be read as a standalone. I was looking forward to reading this novel having previously read and reviewed Ms Burns’ Mirage, which I loved. While it was no hardship to read The Highlander’s Woman and I enjoyed it, Mirage proved a hard act to follow. I admit to being a little disappointed, but I suspect that is more because my expectations were so high. This book does have some darkness and angst (which I really look for in a novel) but lacks the meatiness and intensity which initially attracted me to Monica Burns’ writing .

The story begins with the two protagonists already married and deeply in love, which is fairly unusual. But external factors start to sow the seeds of discord, and although they do not fall out of love, they begin to doubt each other as a result of the events that follow.

Patience Rockwood and Julian MacTavish meet, fall in love at first sight and after a whirlwind courtship, they marry. They enjoy a very sensual and sexually satisfying relationship but despite this, Patience fails to conceive in the first year of marriage and it becomes a matter of great concern to her although Julian isn’t half so hung up about it as she is. Among other things, her failure to conceive causes problems with Julian’s father. The Laird of Crianlarich is an autocratic and dictatorial man who took a dislike to Patience before he had even met her because he had already picked out a wife for his son, the young and beautiful daughter of a friend and neighbour. Although Patience is half Scottish and of good birth, she would never have been good enough for the Laird. After a visit to Julian’s home where the Crianlarich makes his dislike obvious and where she is introduced to the beautiful (and manipulative) young woman who was Julian’s father’s choice, Patience is demoralised and returns to London. Julian is then obliged to return to Scotland alone to carry out his duties as heir, and so their marital problems begin.

There follows a series of events which drives the lovers further and further apart. Patience is possessed of ‘the gift’ or in Gaelic ‘an dara sealladh’, the second sight, which all of the Rockwoods possess to varying degrees and which sets them slightly apart in society. It is one of the reasons that Patience is considered eccentric and why she believed she would never attract a suitor until Julian swept her off of her feet. ‘The gift’ rarely fails her, yet she has snatches of worrying images over a period of time which she cannot interpret, and for which, when the terrifyingly horrific details become reality, she blames herself. This sets in motion a chain of events that will alter all of their lives for ever.

I won’t go into further detail, but suffice to say that Patience and Julian have to learn to live with the fall-out of these events and also to learn to love and trust each other again. In fact, the book is really all about that journey of finding and getting to know each again other in a way they did not at the beginning of their love story. There is a point at which they are almost there, although Patience has yet to reveal her ‘dark secret’ I admit to feeling ever so slightly let down by its revelation.

I liked both characters very much; each is well developed and likeable although Patience is slightly annoying in her initial lack of self confidence, because she had no real reason to be. I mean she had the love of this gorgeous hunk who quite obviously admired and adored her.

Monica Burns uses lots of beautiful Gaelic words and phrases which I loved, although her attempt at a Scottish dialect did not work for me. The smattering of Americanisms, …sass – American term for cheekiness … bobolink – North American songbird – is also jarring, and I can’t understand why, when the author has gone to so much trouble to carefully research the liltingly beautiful Gaelic, she hasn’t paid as much attention to other aspects of the language. How difficult can it be to research birds native to Scotland? On the whole though, The Highlander’s Woman is a well-written story, albeit with a few too many misunderstandings for my taste. The protagonists do, however, get there in the end, and I will read more of Monica Burns’ work, as on the whole I like her writing style.

SUPERB ATTENTION GRABING HIGHLANDER STORY
By Rhonda K
I will start off by stating a fact, Monica Burns is one of the most talented and treasures of an author I have had the pleasure of reading. I mark my calendar for any future releases and try to have them the day of their release. The Highlander’s Woman was such a book. This is book three in the Rockwood series. If the reader doesn’t find this intense fast paced story filled with romance, mystery, hot passion, and magic more than satisfactory, there will be something wrong. This is one of the best heart felt romances I have read in a while.

With the heroine and the hero experiencing drama, forgiveness, and overcoming tragedies, the book will connect with almost anyone who has suffered from misunderstandings and heart break. I will not go into detailed information about the book other than to say these strong characters are eventually up to conquer any challenge life offers them. This story is not your run- of- the- mill fall in love and live without burdens happily ever after, but offers circumstances that many people will actually connect with.

Julian MacTavish and Patience met, fell in love, and married. But then certain circumstances and promises made makes it difficult to be completely honest and hold fast to vows made to other persons. Tragedy strikes and drives the couple apart leaving each one to deal with different types of scars that mar the perfectness. One faces death and the other faces a tragic accident that leaves them, in their own mind, less than whole.

Forgiveness to each other and themselves must happen to bridge the gap that grows ever wider between two people who love each other beyond measure. I will say that this is one of the best romances I have read this year and most assuredly looking forward to more from this author. I highly recommend this and any other release written by Monica Burns. She has earned a place on my auto buy permanent keeper shelf list.

Absolutley loved it! Fast paced, page turner that will melt your heart! Spectacular read! Bravo Ms. Burns!
By Barb Massabrook
This is the the third book in the Reckless Rockwoods series and is it ever a spectacular read but highly emotional too, so I recommend a box of Kleenex nearby. This is my first book by Monica Burns so obviously you can read as a stand alone book or in series order.

Spring, 1897

Julian and Patience are newly married, but as many can relate she has in-law problems right from the beginning, a father-in-law not happy she is half English and still not pregnant with an heir. Also for not picking the bride of his choosing who is a childhood friend who has wanted Julian since they were teenagers and put thoughts of self doubt and infidelity into Patience. Patience has the sight but unfortunately it is not always clear and accurate.

Then due to Julian keeping a friends secret and catching him in lies, Patience fearscthe worse that her husband has taken a mistress which is the furthest from truth. Patience leaves Julian since he is keeping a confidence and she thinks the worse. Patience goes to live with her sister but a horrible fire erupts and in saving her nieces and nephews she is badly burned and disfigured. Julian comes to her side but she rejects him as she doesn't want his pity. Then in a turn of events Julian has a bad carriage accident that leaves him blinded and when Patience runs to his side he reject her pity and sympathy as well. So Patience needs to prove too Julian that she has always loved him no matter what, but how is she suppose to do that? You will have to read this beautiful written story and find out.

This is a wonderful fast paced, page turner with so many twists and turns you wonder how this can be resolved with so much heartache and tragedy. I really felt for this couple to go through so many trials and tests at the beginning of a new marriage that should be nothing but happy and joyous. This was extremely well written and it had all the elements romance readers love in a spectacular Scottish historical romance mistrust, deceit, betrayal, misunderstanding, heartbreak, sympathy, miscommunication, forgiveness and love. I highly recommend The Highlander's Woman by Monica Burns it is truly a superb story about true love and sacrifice that you don't want to miss and will definitely pull your heart strings. You won't be able to put this one down and it's ones of those rare stories that's stays with you long after you have read it! Bravo and thank you Ms Burns for a brilliant read!
