Excellent plot; vapid characterizations
By Erica Starks
There is one thing for sure; Robin Cook is definitely a doctor. Due to the nature of the novel I was more than prepared to have a fair amount of medical terminology and jargon thrown at me...at times it was a bit tedious and the explanations quite lengthy, but for the most part the subject matter kept me interested. However, I was surprised at how sterile and predictable the main characters were written. Susan Wheeler is not only brilliant, but so stunningly beautiful that every male character's inner dialogue (and yes, I do pretty much mean every male) must endlessly muse about how "dynamite" her figure must be under those sexy scrubs. In fact for a good chunk of the book, the sole purpose the character Dr. Bellows served was someone to remind us how gorgeous and virile-looking Susan is. But of course, Wheeler herself feels that her profession has actually "neutered" her sexual appeal and confidence as a woman. Right. Really, Susan was not likeable and it had nothing to do with her seeming perfection. Her sense of entitlement is cloying, and she seemed unable to comprehend that you don't throw attitude towards your superiors on your FIRST DAY OF ROTATION. She simply was not human enough to sympathize with, which is a shame, because there were several instances which I did agree with the gist of her feelings regarding the unfair ways women are treated in the workplace.

Aside from the characters, the actual dialogue of the entire book is far too technical. And when I say technical, I don't mean in terms of medical terminology, because I said before, that was to be expected. But for example, one part of the book was describing you guessed it, Bellows attraction to Susan. It went something like, "Bellows felt his hypothalamus react to the smooth flesh of Susan's bosom". Uh, okay. And don't get me started on a scene where a med student faints while scrubbed in during an operation. Let's just say, Cook wrote more about the med student's physiological happenings while about to faint, rather than giving this med student an actual PERSONALITY.

Despite it's shortcomings, this book did keep me in suspense, and I said before the subject matter is inherently interesting. Although I have to say that finishing the book felt more like completing a required reading assignment rather than a leisurely entertainment. Oh well. This is Cook's first novel, and I can say that with his later writings he did in fact find a balance between writing suspenseful novels and giving miniature dissertations on the reactions of hypothalamuses. I do recommend Coma, and also "Mutation" if you get the chance.

Start your habit here
By A Customer
Robin Cook is not an author, he is a habit. This book is the first to read to start your habit. He at least knows his limitations and his writing career since has not strayed much out of what he is good at, which is, novels about 'inside the medical world', from a doctor, who thrills non-medical people with the inside knowledge of hospitals, drug companies, research labs, etc. Anybody thinking of going into medicine should definitely gobble him up. Some of his novels have better plots than others, but they are all like mind candy, they can all be swallowed in one swallow, they are fast reads, always leave you with some knowledge you are glad to get, and wanting Cook to write more and more. Personally, I read this book years ago, and within days I had raided used book stores for every paperback ed. of his other novels I could get, and they still sit in my living room bookcase, all soiled from my sloppy reading habits :) Coma stands out as the best, for some reason, maybe the novelty at the time. That's where the word 'novel' comes from :) Just don't read this book thinking you can go on and read other authors, you will have to go get more 'Cook books' like I did, and be 'Cooking' for a long time before you can let it go for another author :)

COMA IS AN EXCELLENT BOOK!!!!!!
By Tionna Satterwhite
Coma is a great book about the medical field. The author is Robin Cook, who coincidentally is a doctor, who writes chilling stories about his practice. The title COMA has a lot to do with the main subject of the book. The book is about a college student named, Susan Wheeler and how she investagates how the many patients are slipping into comas unexpectally. She goes through many obstacles to try to the find the answers. None of the doctors or employees at the hospital want to help her. She then fiqures out the problem and that's when many people want bad things done to her.
Robin Cook's style of writing is kind of technical with the medical terms. It is easy to use clues, to fiqure out the meaning of terms. His method of organization is cause/effect, because for every reaction their is either a positive or negative reaction. The author neglected to finish the end of the book and tell the audience about what happened th Wheeler. This book is for mature teenagers, because some of the language and the thoughts of many characters are obsene. The author keeps your attention by making you keep reading the book until the end. At the end of the book the author reveal many of the questions that you wanted answered throughout the book. Coma starts off calm, then toward the end of the book you can't put it down!!
