About the Author

Tom Strachan is Scientific Director of the Institute of Human Genetics and Professor of Human Molecular Genetics at Newcastle University, UK, and is a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. Tom's early research interests were in multigene family evolution and interlocus sequence exchange, notably in the HLA and 21-hydroxylase gene clusters. While pursuing the latter, he became interested in medical genetics and disorders of development. His most recent research has focused on developmental control of the vertebrate cohesion regulators Nipbl and Mau-2.

Andrew Read is Emeritus Professor of Human Genetics at the University of Manchester, UK and a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences. Andrew has been particularly concerned with making the benefits of DNA technology available to people with genetic problems. He established one of the first DNA diagnostic laboratories in the UK over 20 years ago (it is now one of two National Genetics Reference Laboratories), and was founder chairman of the British Society for Human Genetics, the main professional body in this area. His own research is on the molecular pathology of various hereditary syndromes, especially hereditary hearing loss.

Drs. Strachan and Read were recipients of the European Society of Human Genetics Education Award.

Fabulous

I am a geneticist and an undergraduate level professor. I absolutely love this book. It is so clearly written, up to date and full of references, so it feels more like a review (which I hope more science undergrad texts would do). It also contains great examples and illustrations that make it easy to follow the content. I don't think I would be able to use this book for my sophomore genetics class, but this would be an excellent addition to anyone taking an advanced molecular genetics class or related courses in grad school.

rarely have I actually opened a text book

Rarely do I make use of a textbook (what do professors think Google is for?), but this book is phenomenally written. It's both informative and an easy read. If anyone is looking for a human genetics text (anything post intro genetics level), I highly recommend this book.

About the Author
Jeff Lewis is Associate Professor of Media and Cultural Studies, and Senior Research Fellow at the Globalism Institute, both at RMIT University, Melbourne.

Great God-Centered Bible Study on Missions

If you have a heart for the world and want to help others grow in learning, this is a well put together, thoughtful study on the God's desire to glorify Himself among all the nations. I tell every student to get this resource and take their friends through it. Easy to use, packed with great discussion, verses to memorize and thoughts to meditate on as you go. If you have taken Perspectives or a missions class in seminary, Jeff has put together a great introduction to the same material, and made it very user friendly to the rest of us. Don't just buy one!

Outstanding perspective on the real God

Jeff Lewis, the author of this study, is a professor of intercultural Christian studies at CalBaptist in Riverside, CA. I have taken his classes a few times, which all have repeating content of God's purpose among the nations; this study was part of a reading assignment for one of those classes.

Jeff has this down, and he does a great job of communicating it. This isn't a lengthy, wordy, or overly-written encyclopedia of "God as I see it," like many authors tend to do. This is a short, supplemental study that points out many lengths of scripture that support the idea of God being global and not just a Christian tribal deity.

If you have an understanding of God's global purposes that stem from Gen. 1:1 and through the Abrahamic covenant, which continue today, then this is a great study to continue in that perspective. If you are new to the idea that God is not a western/American deity but has a purpose for all the world (including Iran, N Korea, etc), then let this be a catalyst for such a perspective to take you through the door to God's biblical, global vision for history.

Stop asking "What can God do for me?"

This book is a fantastic Bible study. It takes a fresh look at God's Word, and it helps the reader learn to have a more global perspective. It isn't "all about me"... God desires for all nations and all peoples to praise His name! Psalm 46:10 is often only partially quoted... "Be still and know that I am God..." the rest of the verse says, "I will be exaulted among the nations, I will be exaulted in the Earth" This study is deep and insightful, and God can really use it to change your life!

About the Author

Jack Levin is the Irving and Betty Brudnick Professor of Sociology at Northeastern University. His research interests include, criminology, murder, prejudice and hate, and social psychology. Dr. Levin's other books include The Violence of Hate, Why We Hate, The Will to Kill: Making Sense of Sensleless Murder (with James Alan Fox), and Extreme Killing: Understanding Serial and Mass Murder (with James Alan Fox).

 

James Alan Fox is the Lipman Family Professorof Criminal Justice and Professor of Law, Policy, and Society at Northeastern University. He is the author or co-author of sixteen books including Will to Kill and Extreme Killing (both with Jack Levin); winner of the 2007 Hugo Adam Bedau Award for excellence in capital punishment scholarship; and a former Visiting Fellow with the Bureau of Justice Statistics of the U.S. Department of Justice.

 

David Forde is Professor and Graduate Director in the Department of Criminal Justice at the University of Alabama. His principal research activity has been collecting survey and evaluation data on issues of criminal victimization and trauma. Dr. Forde is a current advisor to the National Institute for Law and Equity and a past advisor to the Memphis Shelby Crime Commission on best practices to reduce crime.

I probably would have not passed Statistics if it wasn't for this book

Normally I don't leave book reviews but I had to for this one. I haven't taken a math class for nearly 4 years and decided it was a bright idea to sign up for an online statistics since I needed a finance qualitative course to graduate. I soon came to find out that stats is not an easy class by any means. The semester is almost over and I have an A+ in the course which probably would not be possible without a good textbook. This book is a GREAT book because it actually makes you understand all the theories behind the statistics. You don't just memorize equations but you "get it" because this book does explain them and make them so much more understandable. The best part about this book is that it gives a lot of real life examples on different topics instead of just saying "here's how you get this answer." It shoes you on how to work out problems, step by step and is really clear. When it goes on to new chapters it reviews old concepts that you may have forgotten to help you understand the new concept. It also has a quick reference for all the characters (x, t, P, sp, etc.) right on the inside of the cover. It actually made statistics, dare I say, fun and kind of interesting.

Okay I dont love stats, but it gets the job done.

I took stats during the summer, I've already taken a intro to stats class before and I got away with an A. The instructor this time for a advanced stats class for behavioral science doesn't have a book, && teaches through lecture and application, technically by his standards you should already know how to run the various computer programs and how to input data and choose the correct test. I, on the other hand, waited a whole entire year before signing up for advanced stats so I was more than a little rusty. I e-mailed him about it && he recommended this book as a general guideline. I felt a little on edge when class began, since most of the students had just taken their intro stats class. As the weeks went on, this book was a lifeline. It doesn't give you a guideline on how to input data or use any computer programs, but it does help you in figuring out the purpose and the interpretation of the results, which for my class && job where you use stats is the most important thing. As my teacher says " you have to use baby language for your idiot boss so that they can understand the results or your attempts are futile" . Plus, if you're using a program like SPSS for example, it's idiot proof and you can find all kinds of tutorials online through google or even better, youtube on how to run certain tests and input data.

I didn't read this book front to back, I just used it to help me with write-ups and determining my variables. I'm sure if you're taking an intro class this book would be extremely helpful especially since it helped with a advanced stats class. It's very simple to understand, && it doesn't bore you by adding too many uninteresting and confusing details. The chapters are outlined clearly && it's easy to flip through to find what you are looking for.

After taking this class && having an extremely hard ass teacher, even by taking it in the summer when you have about 5 months jammed into one month, I still got an A && I don't think that would have been as easy to get if I had not rented this book. Which by the way, don't rent this book, you will use it so much that the pages will fall out quickly && you may have problems selling it back haha, I know I'm probably about to have some.

Levin & Fox explain it so that you can actually understand. While it's an old edition (mine was stolen), it's a
good book for beginning stats. If you need multiple regression, this is NOT the book for you. This is for
beginning stats.

An excellent, clear introduction to research methods

This book is a very well-written introduction to methods in psychological research. Goodwin's style is friendly and often humorous. The information he provides is interspersed with case studies, historical antecdotes, and other "real-world" examples of research principles being put into practice. I found the reading to go extremely fast and painlessly.
Goodwin covers such topics as the goals of scientific research, types of experimental research, the fundamentals of experimental design, ethics, subject sampling, types of measurement, assessing validity, and analysis of results. He does not go into great detail about statistics or computational analysis, as this is really meant to be a general introduction to methodology of designing research experiments.

Each chapter begins with an overview, so you have a sense of what to expect ahead. He also provides study questions at the end of every chapter which are very helpful to work through. They are in various forms: multiple choice, short answers, essays, etc. so you can practice describing the topics to be sure you understand the material. There is also a study guide published for this textbook, which I would recommend getting if only for additional practice.
Having a thorough grasp of research methods is critical for any student of psychology, and this book is probably required for many methods classes in universities. Luckily, it's a great textbook to use and makes research methodology interesting and enjoyable.

Shadi Bartsch is the Helen A. Regenstein Distinguished Service Professor of Classics and the Program in Gender Studies at the University of Chicago. She has served as the editor of Classical Philology and�is the author of several books, including, most recently, Ideology in Cold Blood: A Reading of Lucan’s “Civil War.”

Great Resource

This is an excellent book on Ancient Roman and Greek Philosophy over the ocular metaphor in relation to the self, lover and community. This is one of my favorite go to books over the dynamics of gaze and it covers a wide range philosophers other than Socrates, Plato and Aristotle.
